Dérive - Searching for Silence

For most of us, the experience of a heavily populated and busy Indian urban area is no small challenge. To simply explore the city, or just to get somewhere, requires an amount of energy and patience that we aren't accustomed to in our Western lifestyle. While walking the streets, our sensory system is under constant attack - from the noise and the crowds, from challenging sights, and from strong odors that pervade every part of the city. It seems as we are all leaves, drifting at the will of the wind on a unplanned trajectory, attempting to calculate our steps through traffic, waste, and water obstacles. The city constantly invades our personal space; even if it seems that you have managed to escape momentarily as your thoughts sail to faraway places of peace and tranquility, the small, fragile hands of a child grasp at you and pull you back to the ground, to the difficult visages that prevail here.

The Dérive track

Jama Masjid

The Jama Masjid mosque compound is located in the heart of the old city, surrounded by a wall separating the inner compound from the hustle and bustle of the market outside. The high walls damper the city noise and creates a visual barrier, as well as preventing motor traffic.

Ahmed Shah Cemetery

A narrow alley leads from the market to the cemetery  The end of the alleyway opens to an inner courtyard filled with graves, and the area is shaded by a large canopy of trees. The cemetery is entirely separated from the city, the sounds of the market are barely audible, and there are no vendors or motor traffic. Nevertheless, the space is not welcoming and is not inviting for a lengthy stay.

IP Mission Church

The IP Mission Church is located at a very busy intersection, and is surrounded by high-traffic multi-lane roads. The grounds house the priests' residences and the church itself, separated from the city by a high brick wall. The inner courtyard has a calm, peaceful atmosphere, as opposed to what exists beyond the church compound's walls.

Victoria Garden

Just across the road from the IP Mission lies the Victoria Gardens. Compared to the Church, the Gardens do not have any physical separation from the city's traffic, but its size and thick vegetation act as a natural filter, allowing for a quiet and pleasant outdoor space.

Ahmedabad Rooftop Restaurant

So far we have seen many types of peaceful spaces in Ahmedabad. In examining them we found that every place has some kind of physical filter or barrier that separates it from the action of this heavily populated city. In the case of the Ahmedabad Rooftop Restaurant, height is the barrier that separates the space and provides it with its quiet and calm atmosphere.

Le Corbusier / Villa Shodan

I was told that when he was young, in order to get to his bedroom on the first floor, Mr. Shodan used to climb the ramp riding on the back of his horse. Now he gets to his bedroom with an elevator that he installed few years ago. With all these architectural tourists coming to spy and to take photos, he must regret the day he gave the job to LC. It has been years that he would not let anybody in; whenever someone comes, the servant draws the curtain.

Dérive Ahmedabad 2012 - Work & travel

After touring Ahmedabad as tourists, we wanted to experience the city on the flip side - selling products and services to the local people.
The rules for the derive were to go to places where we think we can earn money, not to stay in one place for more then an hour and not to stay where we do not earn money.

The Indian Express on SABA 2012 Rajpur project

"Students of architecture from Jerusalem-based Bezalel University and CEPT University kicked off their joint ‘spontaneous architecture’ workshop by building four classrooms for a government school at Rajpur near Gandhinagar on Tuesday.
As part of an exchange programme between the two design schools, 25 students along with their faculty lived in Mota Chiloda area for over 20 days for the project and the classrooms were inaugurated on Tuesday.
“The idea was to use materials easily available in the area. The students have made them from scratch without using any machines or engaging labourers. Usually, students are used to urban construction, but here they learnt to build in simple yet creative way under budget and resource constraints in the rural context. They have taken a playful interpretation of the classroom and each classroom is done up with a theme,” said Neelkanth Chhaya, Dean, Faculty of Architecture at CEPT University.
“We have just incurred a material cost of Rs 25,000... We are planning to take the model to a policy level and have approached Hansmukh Adhia, principal secretary (education) and Tulja Shankar Joshi from GCERT,” said Parth Shah, a faculty at the architecture school."

SABA Halvad project is GOING PUBLIC

Our SABA 2011 Halvad project features in a new book edited by R. Klanten, S. Ehmann, S. Borges and L. Feireiss, published by Gestalten in Berlin.
The book, titled Going Public: Public Architecture, Urbanism and Interventions - the creative revival of public space "showcases the creative revival of public space in our urban and rural landscapes. The book’s compelling selection of formal and informal interventions, reclamations, and architecture illustrates the current scope and interest in refashioning and repurposing our built environment for public use. The objectives of the featured examples are as diverse as the projects themselves and range from inspiring communication and community experience to devising new means of gathering in and connecting to nature."

SABA in India - Summer 2011

On September 2011, SABA moved for a summer semester in India. The program was held in collaboration with the Architecture Faculty at CEPT University Ahmedabad and the Chandigarh College of Architecture.

Faculty
The semester faculty was composed by a large team of teachers from Bezalel, CEPT and CCA, as well as by a team of retired local professionals (farmers, masons, carpenters, and weaver) who shared their experience with us (in order of appearance):
Sharon Rotbard, Elisheva Levy, Neelkanth Chhaya, Akbar Nazim Modan, Parth Shah, Sangeeta Bagga, Deepika Gandhi, Priyanka Singh, Yatin Pandyia, Ayub Sherasiya, Karshanbai, Sanjibai, and Gittabenn.

Travelling Workshop
The first part of the program was dedicated to a travelling workshop in Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and New Delhi, in which the studio investigated some of India’s architectures (modernist experiments, historical heritage, contemporary architecture, questioned its own practices and possibilities of travelling and movement (tourism, backpacking, architectural tourism, dérive), and researched and documented local sample s of spontaneous architectures and unofficial technologies in cities, slums and villages.

Halvad Workshop
In the second part of the semester SABA moved to the Center for Rural Knowledge near Halwad, a small town in Surendranagar district, Gujarat.
The Center for Rural Knowledge is located on the border of a semi-desert area, 15 km from the Little Ran of Kutch and 5km from Halwad, a small town (30,000 inhabitants) which serves mainly as a center and marketplace for the farmers in the area. It Is a non-profit organization that had been founded by the Indian Center for Environmental Education, in the framework of various aid and self-aid actions initiated in the region after the 2001 earthquake. Since 2007, the center moved to a small experimental farm with a small campus by the architect Neelkanth Chhaya, who designed few other CEE campuses in Gujarat.

The Center for Rural Knowledge, Halvad
The Center assures various types of activities: Aid for local farmers and study, research and development of new technologies of sustainable agriculture (soil improvement, irrigation, fertilization); economical education and empowering of women groups from the region, mainly through micro-banking and the promotion of home industries; various educative activities for the region’s children.

Children’s Corner
SABA was asked to locate a children’s corner within the farm’s compound, and to design and to build 4 open classrooms of 15 m2. Each classroom should have “one floor, one wall, one roof”, and further specification – general activities, library, rest place, computer stand – were added by the Center’s personnel.
The design and building process was done in 20 days, in the spirit of Gandhi’s Village Swaraj – self work, local materials, no machines. The students financed the materials and tools costs, about $300 per classroom.
