Nevertheless, if the body is sick, what will be of the house modelled after it? If the materials from which the building is constructed are malnourished, can it sustain life?

Eating disorder are a modern disease: self starvation can exist in a world where food is in abundance. Contemporary neoliberal and capitalist food systems focus on aesthetics of abundance, but not on quality. We are constantly afraid of obesity and encouraging self control. Binging becomes a solution, for both capitalism's hunger for consumption and control: one consumes large quantities irresponsibly and purges it at once, as if they had never eaten them. This is a cycle of pain a suffering, that seems to never end.

Modern building materials have been suffering too: traditions and vernacular ways of building are disappearing. They require too much: knowledge, care and understanding. We are modern, we do not need to know how to work with stone, timber or bamboo. We have a new material: concrete.

Reinforced concrete was, and perhaps is the "perfect material": relatively cheap, available, clean and efficient. Anywhere around the world, buildings rise, through reinforced columns and beams. These buildings are slowly growing to new heights; The columns stretch until they touch the sky, thinner than ever, reducing the building's contact with the ground, allowing it to float as if it were a light cloud. Under the ground, concrete permeates, takes hold and ensures its permanence. It cannot be escaped, these buildings will stand forever, ever strong, ever healthy.

The sand quarrying, "zizzif", for the production of concrete, starved the coastlines of Palestine and Israel of 10 million cubic meters in a matter of a few decades. In 1964 the quarrying was banned, however the use of concrete not only remained, but grew exponentially. The production of this material is wasteful a great contributer to pollution. Reinforced concrete cannot be recycled.

Concrete is sick. In a sense, concrete is bulimic material; it is made from mixing gravel, sand, cement, and water. The more water it is fed, the more water it absorbs, the more the concrete will vomit its contents out of itself. As the concrete made buildings grow older and accumulate more memories, they become less resilient, eventually collapsing in on themselves.

These buildings were thought to be eternal and everlasting. These preconceptions were quickly realised as these buildings started to fall apart, and slowly were designed to be obsolete.

The buildings themselves, born of concrete, are out of place, echoing the modern country of capital and splendor, where only pure geometric shapes dictate the architecture. Thus, these structures do not correspond with the environment or create an urban harmony. They grow alone, independent, undermining the landscape around them, secretly wishing for mass destruction and for an opportunity to consume their surroundings, in order to regurgitate it, as if it had always been a land ruled by concrete.

Concrete construction is nearly identical all around the world: the mixing ratios, the casting methods, the engineering of the columns and beams. The widespread, use of concrete erases traditional architecture, the vernacular methods and the accumulated knowledge about local construction.

The starving concrete remains hungry, never satiated. It is meant to lose more and more weight, to accumulate more and more floors, as if it were an unlimited resource, as if it would never fall apart. It is designed to erase local craft and rebuild societies in a neoliberal order.

So, should we cancel concrete, or heal it? Is concrete a sickness, or are we?
Tamar Bergerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09654495992168366843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2995315250309250004.post-11495489185169577922023-09-16T16:44:00.000+03:002023-09-16T16:44:02.072+03:00Back to human scale…

text being translated soon…

Sous le soleil brûlant de Chandīgarh, une ville aux contours rigoureusement planifiés, le voyageur plonge dans un univers sensoriel captivant. To be carried away by opportunities without a specific goal or objective. Guy Debord's theory, as I see it, was detailed in the introduction to the post "Derive in Delhi."

For this second derive organized in Sector 13 of Chandigarh, the effect of this theory was much more pronounced due to the urban density. We decided to follow our senses and disguise the one that would be most drawn to. It was first sound, then smell, and finally sight, touch, and taste.

The exercise required 6 hours of derive, half during the day and the other at night. The prescribed time served only as a guide to let go. Unlike my daily habits, which I considered somewhat similar to the theory of the derive, I realized that true deriving forbids having a goal; the objective is precisely to let the city create it for us.

4:30 pm

The derive had just begun when the vibrant music from a Sikh temple called us to it. Barefoot and draped in fabric covering our heads, we entered this place of worship located on the first floor of a makeshift, richly decorated concrete building. In the center, an officiant person reciting the prayer invited us to bow before the stage, and then a woman offered us a sweet dish known in Sikh culture.

While listening to the prayer, our attention was drawn to a small backyard whose contours were barely visible, but out of respect, we decided to restrain our curiosity. The woman saw our interest and invited us to follow her. She was the wife of the religious person, and the courtyard was her home.

It was a single room where the bedroom, kitchen, and living room shared the space. In the center of the courtyard, there was a ladder leading to the temple. We realized that the temple called us back, again and again, and that if we allowed ourselves to be carried away by the repetition of the music, we might never leave this place.

Once we forced ourselves to leave, the bustling street regained our attention. A man appeared with a magnificent turban, and in the spirit of the derive and the hope of finding the same for our professor, we called out to him. Welcoming and helpful as Indians usually are, he offered to take us to a fabric shop, but he stopped to greet friends, and we were drawn by the muffled sound of drums on the first floor of the same building.

We gently pushed open the door and behind it, a music group was set up in a makeshift studio with walls covered in acoustic foam and artificial grass on the floor, commanding artistic respect. We were automatically invited to participate in an improvisation and singing session, and later, a composer joined us and shared his latest creations.

Once the decibels had reached the migraine threshold, we decided to continue our journey…

The city's acoustics would soon draw us to another temple, like typhoons juxtaposing the city and drawing us into their hearts over and over. This one was larger, more majestic, and more ornate, inviting us to enter from the street. Once again, we removed our shoes to join the prayer.

This time, a worshiper sitting in a corner pointed the way with a fluid index finger movement, asking us, in the beginning, to pass through the central path to greet the officiant. Then we sat for a while on a carpet adorned with a thousand motifs. When we decided to leave this place, the same old man signaled us firmly not to leave the temple. We obeyed.

We understood from the tone and rhythm of the prayer that the moment was important, and we needed to be attentive to the intensity of the chant and its silence. Then the congregation rose and followed the officiant to a back room where they placed the prayer book in a sacred bed. It was a magnificent moment of communion and belief to which we had been invited to participate. The prayer was nearing its end, and while the temple would remain open, the service was interrupted.

We thanked the old man with a wave of the hand - admittedly much less delicate than his gestures - and continued our derive. We discovered a micro-neighborhood of winding streets, buildings separated by only a few centimeters, and residents living right on the street. The street was an integral part of their homes, blurring all well-known architectural boundaries between inside/outside, private/public, open/closed. Since the street was not open-air but nestled between two buildings, the living room could extend into the street, the bedroom could accommodate scooters, and the bed could have a view of the living room.

At the exit of this area, a magnificent brick wall caught my eye. We decided to keep one of its bricks to tell the story of our derive. What a surprise when we presented it to our professor. Two Indians joined us, and with great fascination, they told us about the historical significance of this brick called Lakhori, which must have been at least 200 years old. An archaeological construction element made of lime, surki, jaggery, bael fruit pulp and 23 more ingredients incuding urad ki daal ( past of Vigny mungo pulse).

I must admit to having deep remorse about taking an element of its history from its place, but the fascination of these two Indians was such that one of them, an architect, decided to keep it, slightly easing my regret.

With our find in hand, we resumed our journey. The sounds of a lively and noisy market intrigued our ears. Merchants selling pigments, spices, art supplies, and fabric lined the streets. It was time to find a turban for our professor. We found a shop displaying brightly colored fabrics in a perfectly organized gradient, leaving us somewhat bewildered after becoming accustomed to the chaos of this country. A foreinger, an outsider, in the belly of the city-beast, often described as hell? A city born out of a navel, on a bed of snake and lotus? Do I write about Delhi, the capital of the newly independent India, the largest metropolitan of this great nation, home to extrodinary national monuments? Or do I write about delhi, the lower case city, conqured by streets ridden with trash, broken pavemens and everlasting smog? And what is it like, to walk in such a city, as a woman? To play a game of derive, free the movement from taylorism, adapt experimental behaviour and wander through alleyways, finding perhaps the beating heart of hers?

We arrive at sunrise at India Gate. We were told that this area would be safer for us. The sun emerges out of its sleep, sheepishly peeping between the reddish stone and yellowish granite archway. We sit atop the fountain, by manicured lawns. Police men and soldiers are roaming the grounds, shifting our movements and motioning us around. We are under constant surveillance, we are followed, we are surrounded, we must escape. And so we turn, and again we are surveilled, but now we are under constant scrutiny of curious eyes, penetrating, pregnant with wonder. They see our foreign and feminine nature. We look back, through them, trying to decipher the city, as if they are not a part of it.

Rather than a linear derive, we form a spiral path, walking the rigidly planed grid of the India Gate area, finding temporary autonomous moments of solace, when the street is empty and deserted. Two blocks, five blocks, the flowers on the trees bare no resemblance, each unique, however each of the same uniform nature. Under the apparent diversity, lies unity. Sometimes a butterfly emerges between lush leaves, sometimes a bike honks from nearer distance. We continue to walk, hoping to find something at least. We see the heat radiating from the asphalt roads, pulsing into the sky. We drench sweat, our shirts turning translucent. Our bodies cannot but interact with the city, and the city interacs with our body: small particales penetrate our skin and we start to share the same urban stench; we taste it with every sip, with every trickeling of sweat.

The day melts under the blazing sun of Delhi, and night creeps in. We find no refuge in the night air: it is engulfing and as dense as an old heavy blanket. Not only does it not protect us, it exposes us, brings with it the anticipation of lenience, of promiscuity. Perhaps we should have dressesd up as men, set free and unseen. We are touched, fondeld, we feel the warmth of the stares growing colder.

In a sense, just like Lord shiva's third eye that turns gods into ash, to see is to destroy. Trying to see the city, its truth, to peel it like an onion, layer by layer, to uncover its translucent truth in search of a core, eventually leads through a path of futility; the onion has no core, we had not found the heart of the city. It had regurgitated us, sent us on our way home on the sparkling metro line. I don't think it wanted us to see it, not like this at least. Not with our eyes covered by curtains of fables, true stories and fear. We watched, never fading into the scence, never truly drifting.

Tamar
Tamar Bergerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09654495992168366843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2995315250309250004.post-15888873058247758752023-09-10T06:21:00.001+03:002023-09-10T06:21:40.774+03:00Once upon a time in Chandigarh

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2995315250309250004.post-22612703539164749362023-09-08T07:31:00.001+03:002023-09-08T07:31:26.781+03:00Concrete and Power: a tribute to Balkrishna Doshi

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2995315250309250004.post-50068493051662645912023-09-07T13:00:00.005+03:002023-09-11T17:22:51.616+03:00Capturing Architectural Progress: Sharing My Indian Journey Through Drawings

Capturing Architectural Progress: Sharing My Indian Journey Through Drawings

I m publishing my architectural drawings' photos for several reasons, the foremost being to chronicle the progression of my artistic journey. Each drawing is the product of effort, creativity, and personal exploration. By sharing them, I create a visual record of my path, my advancements, and the challenges I have encountered. I've never really drawn before, and this studio is a perfect opportunity to practice this essential skill for an architect.

In exposing my drawings to the scrutiny of others, I also hope to gather constructive feedback and guidance that will aid in my improvement. Architecture is a vast and intricate field, and every drawing represents an opportunity for learning.

Furthermore, sharing creations enables me to connect with a community that shares similar interests. I can exchange ideas, techniques, and inspirations with other artists and architects, fostering an environment conducive to mutual growth.

I will develop later the context and the choice of each draw.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; As we stepped on board, we were greeted by new souls, their faces filled with warmth, who directed us toward a local market that was a vivid tapestry of colors and life. Forty minutes later, we found ourselves standing inside a theater, its ornate façade illuminated by the soft glow of evening, without ever having to reach for our wallets.

Inside, a captivating performance awaited us—a showcase of traditional dances from various Indian states. For two hours, we wandered within the theater's dimly lit expanse, searching for the perfect vantage point, one that would offer us an unobstructed view of the stage and the vibrant costumes adorning the dancers.

When the curtain fell, we waited with bated breath. We melted when Rami Karmi shared with us phraseologies such as "The concrete is a material full of darkness".

We were impressed by the honesty of concrete, we believed that it is always a "Truthful, honest negative of the formwork to which it was molded"; we endlessly philosophized about the ethics of the aesthetics and the aesthetics of the ethics; we attributed to concrete qualities and values, "not only honesty, directness and righteousness but also dryness, aggressiveness and imperviousness". We contemplated those concrete structures as if they were philosopher stones that have something to tell us. We wrote that "they expressed what we wanted to be, the way we wanted to see ourselves and what we were demanded to be: bare, real, direct, strong, and above all - irreversible."

Some of us made the pilgrimage to Marseille, Chandigarh, Tokyo or Brasilia to see their grey wonders with their very own eyes. Those who couldn't make the trip could have easily found their wish in Beer-Sheva, Qiryat-Gat, Ein-Guedi, Nazrat-Illit or even in Tel Aviv. We wrote articles, essays and books, we organized exhibitions, symposiums, seminars, tours. We signed petitions and protested against damages that might be caused to brutalist masterpieces, we published fiery articles whenever someone dared to paint them or worse to whitewash them. Some of us even wrote or promoted official plans that assured the preservation of those concrete structure forever. Sometimes we even erected such concrete structures for us and our families.

It is needless to say: today Béton is bon-ton.

All this might have happened even without all this fuss and even without bothering much about concrete's bare appearances. Concrete is today not only bon-ton but above all the most common building material, its use is widespread all over the planet. And even when we don't really see it we know that it is there, somewhere under the ground, behind the claddings or the plasters. We cannot think of our planet's surface without reinforced concrete, this new "Artificial Stone" that turned into the new earth's geological layer. We are addicted to concrete. We cannot do without it.

But let us listen to the German philosopher Anselm Jappe who argues in a recent book that concrete is the "mass construction weapon of capitalism" and that its past and future damages could pare only those caused by capitalism's two other "flag-materials", plastic and oil.

Jappe brings up few important points: Almost in all the countries in the world, concrete is a product of a dubious chain of production in which from one side there is a state-owned or controlled monopolies that are responsible for the quarrying, importation and the production of the cement while the quarrying and supplies of the sand are always handled by organised crime monopolies. And even though in most countries of the world sand quarries are illegal, none of those regulations diminishes the use of concrete, on the contrary. Same goes with all the direct and indirect damages caused by this industry which is usually not taken accountable for its impact - the production of cement itself is extremely polluting.

The concrete production and supplies chains are completed by those of the architecture and the construction. This universal technology, this absolute abstraction of a material that could be easily transported in a form of powder but could easily be solidified into the form of a dam, this Unbearable Lightness of the architect who can sit in his office, imagine a wall and draw a double 0.5 line, or that of the engineer or computer program to calculate it - all these are part of a broader regime. This division of tasks is what enables the industrialization of the planning and the construction process. Concrete is transforming our cities into markets and our homes into financial products, and by the way it transports materials, tools and people from one place in the world to another. Concrete has brought not less than a social revolution that created all over the planet few new billionaires and many new classes of enslaved immigrant workers. If in the past, building sites were places of craftsmanship, creativity and expertise bringing artists and artisans together, today those places have become alienated, sometimes deadly spaces of exploitation and abuse, bulling and lawlessness.

Since the first half of the 20th century, when it started to be massively used, and in few years, concrete eliminated the use of local materials and led to the extinction of centuries-long construction traditions and technologies. In that it had a major role in transforming the whole world into one concrete country in which the differences between places or cities disappear. The result is equally alienated and sometimes ugly in every place on earth.

But above all: reinforced concrete is the newest construction material. It is in use for a century only. Nobody can really tell if this combination of cement, aggregates, steel and water can hold for centuries and what would really happen during the prolonged encounter of those materials with the sun, the water, the air, during the general movement of things towards the unavoidable entropy.

According to Jappe, his main motive in writing this book was the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genoa in 2018,half a century after its completion. This collapse of this bridge, which had been a major circulation artery of the city, caused the death of 53 people, the injuries of dozens and paralyzed the whole city for a long period of time. The failure of the bridge was due to corrosion that attacked the still cables in its prestressed beams. At the time of its construction, in the 1960s, the Morandi bridge was considered as a technological achievement, but still, it did not last more than half a century. In smaller scales and in much more mundane uses we can see very often typical failures associated with concrete. In many cases they are caused by the unreliable chain of production which enables using unqualified workers and occasional groups. But even when the execution is correct there are quite many known pathologies - capillary cracks, leaks, poor thermic and acoustic performances and gradually, with the material fatigue, we witness crumbling, corrosion, exposure of the steel to air and water and finally, from time to time, columns crack, ceilings collapse, balconies fall. Last year, in the city of Holon, a whole apartment building collapsed. Just like that, because of the light, the air, the utopia.

We must admit that though it has been a default option of almost any architecture of our time, at the moment we do not know how to make concrete last. We can no more say that it is too early to tell if concrete would last forever. We already know it will not. And in the meanwhile, not only we don't actually know how to preserve it when it is really needed, we also don't know what to with it when it becomes obsolete. Briefly we can say that we are not so sure that all this concrete that we have been pouring in the last century would hold for one more century (it is quite likely it will not). We know already that most of what we have built would be either demolished intentionally or collapse spontaneously, but that we do not know what to do with the debris.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2995315250309250004.post-72711338977768075912015-05-12T18:32:00.000+03:002015-05-12T18:32:32.275+03:00SABA Spring 2014 OccupyTLV in the Mobile Home Project catalogue

The history of Tel Aviv, presented for a moment as an architectural history, can be seen as a part of a wider process in which the physical shaping of Tel Aviv and its political and cultural construction are intertwined, and plays a decisive role in the construction of the case, the alibi, and the apologetics of the Jewish settlement across the country.
In 2004, the city of Tel Aviv was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site, an exemplar of modernism in architecture and town planning. Today, the Hebrew city of Tel Aviv gleams white against the desert sky, its Bauhaus-inspired architecture betraying few traces of what came before it: the Arab city of Jaffa. In White City, Black City, the Israeli architect and author Sharon Rotbard offers two intertwining narratives, that of colonized and colonizer. It is also a story of a decades-long campaign of architectural and cultural historical revision that cast Tel Aviv as a modernist “white city” emerging fully formed from the dunes while ignoring its real foundation—the obliteration of Jaffa. Rotbard shows that Tel Aviv was not, as a famous poem has it, built “from sea foam and clouds” but born in Jaffa and shaped according to its relation to Jaffa. His account is not only about architecture but also about war, destruction, Zionist agendas, erasure, and the erasure of the erasure.

Rotbard tells how Tel Aviv has seen Jaffa as an inverted reflection of itself—not shining and white but nocturnal, criminal, dirty: a “black city.” Jaffa lost its language, its history, and its architecture; Tel Aviv constructed its creation myth. White City, Black City—hailed upon its publication in Israel as ”path-breaking,” “brilliant,” and “a masterpiece”—promises to become the central text on Tel Aviv.
Searching for an alternative moving space, Mobile Home Project is going to be put on display from 21st of November to 19th of December in Song Won Art Center and Corner Gallery. In this exhibition, 20 groups of globally active artists and architects will participate to look for the possibility and present situation of movable spaces. 9 national-based groups are accessing topics under the social context of Korea, while 11 groups of foreign artists from Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, the United States, and Spain introduce experimental cases and alternative models on their diverse social and physical contexts.
Space was initially formed in need of human and generated distinctive architectural and life styles based on different cultures. The movement in space, thus, arises from the movement of human. Different forms of mobile home appeared in parallel to the activities of human looking for a living space, for example to escape from an uninhabitable area, for the dispossessed to discover a temporary habitat, or to migrate to a better site. Mobile Home Project is a project in relation to space that has been created from the migration and movement, and it aims to study the possibility of moving space under art and life. Basically, the project intends to research about the attempted fluid and hypothetical space project and throws questions regarding periodic phenomena.
The underlying reason of defining the form of space as the movement of space or the movement of one individual in a smaller scale lies on diverse social political background such as the limit of physical habitat or the exile from social system. The movable space- mobile home starts from the movement resulted from the realistic limit and physical incapacity. Focusing on the creative form of space resulted from uninhabitable situations, the exhibition talks about the relationship between movable space and life. The artworks of 20 groups at home and abroad approach in various aspects to discuss about life on the border, body to space, labor mobility, moving house, floating land. The Mobile Home Project will search for creative ways to involve in our lives and share possibility of constantly potential alternative model with the contemporary artists and architects.
"In 2030, the world’s population will be a staggering eight billion people. Of these, two-thirds will live in cities. Most will be poor. With limited resources, this uneven growth will be one of the greatest challenges faced by societies across the globe. Over the next years, city authorities, urban planners, designers, economists, and many others will have to join forces to ensure these expanding urban enclaves remain habitable.
Uneven Growth, the latest exhibition in MoMA’s Issues in Contemporary Architecture series (which also includes Foreclosed and Rising Currents), addresses this increasingly inequitable urban development.
In conjunction with the exhibition, this online platform welcomes the public around the world to submit examples of "tactical urbanisms"—temporary, bottom-up interventions that aim to make cities more livable and participatory.
In the scope of the exhibition, six interdisciplinary teams of researchers and practitioners were brought together to examine new architectural possibilities for six megacities: Hong Kong, Istanbul, Lagos, Mumbai, New York City, and Rio de Janeiro. Challenging assumed relationships between formal and informal, bottom-up and top-down urban development, the resulting design scenarios, developed over a 14-month initiative, consider how emergent forms of tactical urbanism can respond to alterations in the nature of public space, housing, mobility, the environment, and other major issues of near-future urbanization."
